Descent into Feeling

Vinyasa Yoga for Embodiment

Do you ever come up blank when someone poses the question “How do you feel right now?” If so, you might be experiencing some form of dissociation, or a disconnection from your body’s feeling sense. Most humans in modern society experience this on at least a mild level, because capitalism forces us to override our feelings in order to prioritize efficiency and function.

As a single mom, I feel a pressure to spin 10 plates on each fingertip (work, clean, love, connect, nurture, self-care, eat, feed, exercise, host), and I fear that if I let one plate go, my entire world will collapse. This mentality doesn’t leave a lot of room for feeling, and this is why my yoga practice is so important to my wellbeing. Embodiment can feel like a luxury, but for me, it’s essential. I want to be open to the beautiful nuance of being alive in this world, in this body, with all of the pain and joy and grief and rage and wonder available to me.

We can learn how to drop, really descend from the head and into the body. And when we do this, we begin to discover the richness of the body in the body.

- Willa Blythe Baker

I hope you enjoy this practice as an opportunity to drop out of your head and into your body, to experience the joy and pain of being alive and all it has to offer.
